Betsey Johnson Styles the Windows at Macy’s Herald Square

20130313_14405470-year-old design extraordinaire, Betsey Johnson caused a whole lot of hubbub on 34th street yesterday, as she publicly staged a window display promoting her new dress line at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City. Betsey sired up so much attention, that an ambulance actually collided with another motor vehicle on 34th street.

The event was super fun, and drew a crowd of lots of Betsey Babes decked out in Betsey dresses from past and present. Betsey, along with her assistant Brandon Aldrige and the folks at Steve Madden decked out the windows with her new dresses manufactured by The Levy Group, Betsey jewelry and M&J Bridal Salon tiaras. Betsey painted faces on manikins and also painted “ ak_betsey_macys_march2013Lipstick, Diamonds, Champagne, Rock and Roll” on the wall behind her display. Betsey also brought her granddaughter, Layla along for the ride, for what proved to be a very adorable three hours.

Betsey will be back at Macy’s in May to do another public appearance and meet and greet with her fans–needless to say, we’re really looking forward to that.

Betsey Johnson to adorn the windows at Macy’s #DressMeBetsey

A blizzard may be heading to New York City, but that won’t stop Betsey Johnson from jazzing up the windows at Macy’s Herald Square on Thursday, to celebrate the launch of her new dress line. Customers who shop the collection will get a free gift with purchase and an opportunity to see the 70-year-old designer. Ms. Johnson will appear in the windows from noon to 3 PM.

reg_1024.betsy.mh.022813

Good news for all the Betsey Babes out there!

Betsey Johnson is back with a new, and much more affordable collection of fabulously feminine dresses. And while the price point may have changed, Johnson’s trademark knack for combining edgy yet girly designs has not.

Starting at $99, the new line features a variety of versatile dresses, including a pretty and punk multi-colored animal print peplum number, a playful polka dot frock complete with whimsical red tulle lining and even a ladylike floral dress that will take you from work to happy hour come spring, which just so happens to be when the line launches at retailers like Macy’s and Nordstrom.

Manhattan Vintage hosts Paraphernalia to Punk, Vintage Betsey Johnson Exhibition and Sale

20b_460_690autoManhattan Vintage is hosting an exhibition titled Paraphernalia to Punk, Vintage Betsey Johnson now through February 4. All of the garments in the exhibition are for sale and range from $110 to $2,970 (well more than a round trip ticket to Mexico.)

The first Paraphernalia store opened in 1965 on Madison Avenue. As part of the original design team, Betsey Johnson led the boutique into a fashionable new era in New York, creating revolutionary new fashions for the youth market. No Paraphernalia clothes retailed for more than $99. Betsey spent 5 years at Paraphernalia, and she recalls that during that phase of her life, she had free reign to design whatever it was that she liked. In the following years her designs were worn by style setters such as actresses Julie Christie and Brigitte Bardot, model Twiggy, and Edie Sedgwick. From 1970-1974 Betsey Johnson designed for Alley Cat, a junior sportswear company. She had full creative control, designing everything from the textiles used in her designs to the accompanying shoes. Like her clientele, Johnson was aware that strict fashion rules had fallen by the wayside in favor of a more eclectic approach to fashion. Her designs were also made accessible to another market, home sewers, when she collaborated on a line of Betsey Johnson for Alley Cat patterns with Butterick Patterns. Her designs were first produced under the Betsey Johnson of Alley Cat label and later as Betsey Johnson. She produced over fifty patterns with Butterick. In 1978, revived by the punk movement, Betsey Johnson partnered with ex-model Chantal Bacon, whom she met while designing children’s clothes in 1975, to start their own company, the Betsey Johnson label. From Paraphernalia, to Alley Cat and finally Betsey Johnson, Betsey always brought the fun.

Betsey Johnson Won’t Show at Fashion Week

New York Magazine’s The Cut, reports that although Betsey previously told the Wall Street Journal that her spring 2013 retrospective wouldn’t be her last season showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Johnson won’t be showing next month for the fall 2013 runways, instead she is trying “to focus on her brand expansion” — including her “dress thing” and a perfume — according to a press release. Frankly after last week’s talk at the 92nd street Y, I’m not sure Betsey and the word focus belong in the same sentance. “But she will be cartwheeling through Lincoln Center at an event for her new reality series, The Betsey and Lulu Show.” We can’t wait, every time we see her do a cartwheel, our heart melts, just a little!

On Wednesday, Elijah Vielma and I trecked uptown to the 92nd Street Y to see Fern Mallis, the creator of Fashion Week in New York, interview fashion legend Betsey Johnson. The interview went well over the normal ninety minutes allotted for the interviews and Mallis had quite a bit of trouble getting Betsey to stay on the topics she wanted to talk about in chronological order. Betsey herself seemed restless and got up several times throughout the interview to remove articles of clothing, give dramatic demonstrations and just play with her $20,000 hair extensions ”you wouldn’t believe how much it costs to look this cheap” Johnson exclaimed.

Before Johnson started the interview, she gave her audience a special treat and treated us to her signature cartwheel. In the interview she told Fern “I’d really love to meet a great guy and fall in love again”. Betsey said she doesn’t think that she’ll be marrying for a fourth time, but told us, “I’d like to find some beautiful piece of eye candy and be in love with them. Somehow the eye candy is getting younger and younger”.

Fern kicked things off by telling us she was wearing a jacket Johnson had designed a long time ago for a charity auction.

An exhibit boasting art inspired by the pop culture icon, “Hello Kitty, Hello Art!,” opens Friday in Little Italy. It celebrates a new book of the same name. The fashion-conscious feline also has partnered with style and beauty brands like Sephora and Forever 21.
And she recently made her debut as a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
“I love Hello Kitty,” gushes designer Betsey Johnson, one of 45 artists whose Kitty-themed pieces will be on display at Openhouse Gallery on Broome St. Friday through Sunday. “She’s fun, accessible, global – absolutely established worldwide. Everybody knows Hello Kitty.”

Editorial Photo-Shoot in NYC: Queen of the Jungle

Queen-of-the-Jungle-4499Earlier today, my great friend and former Madison Square Garden house photographer, Betsy Becker and I headed over to Columbus Circle where artist, Peter Woytuk has two of his sculptures–life size replicas of elephants on display. I’ve been dreaming about centering a photo-shoot around them ever since I first saw them.

Last night I went to the Home Depot, a store I think I’ve only been to once or twice in my entire life to pick up an eight-foot ladder, which is unfortunately the largest ladder they sell in their store, as the elephant is about ten feet high at its lowest point. Miraculously, I was able to get onto and off of the elephant unscathed.

There weren’t any signs on the sculptures that said you couldn’t climb them; nonetheless we did the shoot at 6:45 AM as to not draw a crowd or attract police attention. Read more and view photos below.

I decided to wear Betsey Johnson’s Rose Topiary strapless dress, it’s a gorgeous fuchsia dress, countless rosettes cover the poofy bubble skirt, and ribbing gives the bodice an edgy look. The dress retails for $485 and is available now in black and fuchsia at Betsey Johnson’s website and at her boutiques.

The elephants are just two of the eighteen whimsical and captivating sculptures placed for public view on the Broadway Malls from Columbus Circle to 168th Street that have been on display since October. The Malls are a 5.5 mile-long park that provides a welcome green space from the Upper West Side through Harlem to Washington Heights. The sculptures will be coming down sometime this month.

Peter Woytuk is a well known American sculptor whose work ranges  from the small to the grand in an interplay of convex and concave form, space, color and shadow. Animals are a vehicle for expression and favorites are birds of varying sizes and shapes and voluminous, gracefully composed animals such as bulls and elephants. Some are alone, but many sculptures are compositions with fruit of striking colors, stone and other materials.

Many of the pieces for the New York exhibition Peter created in China and Thailand, where he lives for most of the year, and then were shipped to his studio in Kent, Connecticut. There, the final details are being worked out and the sculptures are being prepared to travel to New York City.
